Most council chairmen in Jigawa state cannot read and write says SDP chairman

A onetime member of the House of Representatives, representing Guru, Kiri-Kasamma and Hadejia federal Constituency and the current chairman of the Social Democratic party (SDP) Jigawa state, Honourable Abba Anas Adamu said many council chairmen in the state “are chronic illiterates that cannot read and write.”

Adamu who stated this Tuesday while addressing a press conference in Dutse on the outcome of the just concluded last Saturday’s local government election said the illiterates always carry their official correspondences home for their brothers to read for them.

On the election, he said “there weren’t any elections, rather self-impositions of candidates due to personal greed of Governor Badaru Abubakar and his caprices”.

“How will one adjudged there was elections in jigawa, the elections that was characterized by voters apathy, open thumb print on ballot papers by hired APC political thugs, among other elections malpractices”, he said.

Honourable Adamu attributed the state’s backwardness to greed, lack of public experience and exposure from those steering the mantle of leadership at all levels of governance.

He said the has already dragged the state electoral body to court to challenge the council election on five fundamental key issues.

“Firstly, the way and manner the elections were conducted as its process contravened electoral laws, and the country’s constitution going by elections malpractices involved.

“Secondly,  on the question of depraving other political parties to partake in the elections. And thirdly, the state electoral body has no right constitutionally to charged contestants or candidates of other political parties to pay huge amount of money before qualified,” he said.
