Lawmaker bemoans educational facilities in FCT

The lawmaker representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Chinedu Obika, has faulted the poor state of educational facilities in most government schools within the territory.

Hon Obika was speaking on Friday during a kick-off programme of the ‘Reach a Child Campaign’, organised by a non-governmental organisation in collaboration with his office in Mpape, a suburb of Maitama district.

According to the lawmaker, “The FCT has not gotten it right in educational infrastructure within the territory. If there is anywhere that should be the pacesetter state in educational standards, it should be the FCT, but the reverse is painfully the case.”

On why his office decided to partner with Health Education Agriculture Development (HEARD) Africa initiative to facilitate a touch on some schools and students in the territory, he said education is the only legacy one can give to the next generation.

To that extent, he promised that his office would award scholarship to some students in the Junior Secondary School in Mpape and as well solve the perennial water problem in the school within the first quarter of 2024.

The Labour Party lawmaker used the opportunity to also announce that a similar public engagement would be carried out in the Junior Secondary School Kabusa, another settlement in the FCT.

The engagement which attracted the management of FCT SUBEB, JSS Mpape management and students was also attended by crews of journalists from the prints and electronics media houses.

On her part, principal/director of the school Mrs Onugwu Ngozi lauded Hon. Obika and HEARD for the choice of her school while Mrs Akaoma Onyemelukwe, the executive director of HEARD Africa announced that 1000 children would be reached with educational and personal care materials as part of the outreach.

She said the whole idea was to eradicate poverty minimally from women and children.
