The lawmaker representing Kogi West at the Senate, Dino Melaye, has said the invasion of those he referred to as “political thugs” to disrupt his protest was the second assassination attempt on his life.
Blueprint reports that the peaceful protest which took place at the main gate of Kogi State Polytechnic at about 11 am was violently interrupted as gunmen, suspected to be thugs, opened fire on Senator Dino Melaye leaving one person dead and another injured.

Melaye, who had already finished addressing the students, had earlier given the state government 30 days ultimatum to pay workers their salaries and re-open tertiary institutions in the state , saying he was ready to lead a civil protest at the end of the ultimatum.
Meanwhile, Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello has assured the people that no amount of distraction from Senator Melaye could dissuade his administration from providing adequate security of lives and property to the people.
The governor, who gave the assurance yesterday shortly after a protest organised by Senator Melaye in Lokoja that led to the death of a student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Saka Seidu, and one other person that sustained injuries, said it was on record that in the month of January, this year, the lawmaker had planned to cause security breach in order to make the state ungovernable.

Bello added that the current happening in the state that led to the death of a student has clearly shown that Senator Melaye meant to cause mayhem in the state.
The governor, who expressed displeasure over the incident, lamented that a lawmaker that was supposed to be making laws for the betterment of the people had turned around to cause their death.
He asked security agents in the state to investigate the incident to avoid re-occurrence.
