Kano to establish sexual assault referral centre

Kano state government has established an effective mechanism for checking the menace of Rape geared towards ensuring a decent society.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Maliki Kuliya Umar, gave this indication at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting on Anti-rape Campaign organised by Justice Sector Reform Team in collaboration with Coalition against Rape and Violence (CARAV) held at Mambayya House, Kano.
Umar said part of the measures for checking the negative trend was the move by the government to establish Sexual Assault referral Centre as obtained in Lagos and Enugu.
Umar, who is also the chairman of Justice Sector Reform Team, lamented the ills of rape and related crimes to the socio-economic development of the society.
Earlier, the Grand patron of (CARAV) and former Dean, Faculty of Law, Bayeo University, Kano (BUK), Prof. Muhhamed Tabiu, emphasised the need for concerted efforts in addressing rape and decried how parents of rape victims do not wanted cases reported.
He said plans were underway by CARAV to embark on massive anti-sexual assault campaign across Kano state and solicited for support of stakeholders to achieve set objectives.
Vice-chairman of CARAV, Barrister Ibrahim Murktar, who represented the chairperson, Barrister Aisha Ado Abdullahi, said the coalition, comprising Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), International Federation of women Lawyers FIDA, crime Reporters Association, National Human Rights Commission among others was poised to reduce rape to the barest minimum by ensuring that perpetrators are prosecuted and victims supported.
Meanwhile, the Deputy National President of Nigerian Guild of Editors also Acting Director Radio, Kano FM, Comrade Aishatu Sule, has described the stakeholders’ meeting as “timely,” emphasising that  the media had a vital role to play in the anti-rape campaign.
