Kannywood has transformed me into a patient woman – Ummi Tarore

Aisha Adam Muhammad, also known as Ummi Tarore, is a rising star in the Kannywood. In this interview with IBRAHIM HAMISU in Kano, Ummi shares her journey on how has managed to feature in over 25 movies in less than two years.

Background

My name is Aisha Adam Muhammad, but I’m better known as Ummi Tarore. I was born in Jos in 2002, but I currently reside in Kano. I attended Mahmud Sani Madakin Gini Primary School, and for my secondary education, I went to Army Day Secondary School, both located in Kano. However, I discontinued my studies after secondary school.

What inspired you to join Kannywood?

I have had a passion for movies since I was a child, but my parents didn’t support my interest until I got married. Unfortunately, my father passed away and my marriage crashed. Despite these hardships, my love for movies remained, and it was my mother who provided me with the support and encouragement to pursue my dream.

When exactly did you join Kannywood?

I joined the Kannywood industry in 2021, and my debut film was called Ashfat, which I also directed.

Tell us more about your first movie?

In my first film, Ashfat, I played the lead role and also took on the directorial responsibilities. It was an incredible experience for me, considering that it was my debut project.

How many movies have you worked on so far?

I have already completed 25 movies up until this point.

Among the films you’ve made, which one stands?

Honestly, Jinin jikina is the film that resonates with me the most. Even though I wasn’t the lead actress in that particular movie, the way I portrayed my character made me feel like the heroine. It was a contest I participated in, and that experience truly excites me.

What motivated you to pursue a career in film generally?

There’s this actress named Zahra Preety who frequently collaborates with MM Sidi. Her performances are incredibly impressive, especially when she portrays intense scenes of conflict with her on-screen husband. Watching her work brings me joy and a sense of connection. It’s as if I can relate to her emotions, and I find great entertainment in that.

Have you ever been married?

I am currently single, but I was married in 2018, and I have two daughters.

Through whom did you join Kannywood?

Yes, I entered the Kannywood industry through the guidance of MM Sidi. He advised me to take things slowly and then introduced me to Alasan Kwalli, the head of the actors department, where I began my journey by working on my first film.

Did you face any challenges when you first join Kannywood or did you find it easy getting started?

I’ve certainly faced numerous challenges, and I have continued to face them till this day. Some of my siblings and other individuals have been critical of me, using inappropriate language. However, my mother and her brother, Hassan, are the ones who provide me with support. Unfortunately, my brothers and neighbours do not speak kindly about my endeavours. Some people even suggest that I don’t belong in the movie industry.

Which of your films has been the most challenging for you?

There’s a film called Takobin So that proved to be quite demanding. I went through a lot during its production. I genuinely experienced many of the things portrayed in the film. For instance, I had to run on a rough terrain, which caused me physical pains. I was also involved in scenes of kidnapping and falling ill. However, the movie has not been released yet.

Who are the co-stars from your films that bring smiles to your face when you think of them?

There’s a movie called Bugun Numfashi that never fails to make me laugh. It’s a love story, and while we were filming, I could genuinely feel the love in my heart. When that love was taken away in the story, I experienced a sense of absence. Then, when it was brought back, it made me laugh.

From the time you join Kannywood until now, what successes can you reflect upon?

I’ve achieved a lot, both in terms of social skills and personal growth. As a woman, I used to have a quick temper and get easily angered. However, since joining Kannywood, I’ve learned the importance of patience in dealing with people. My anger has subsided. Overcoming my laziness has been a significant achievement. Thus, the greatest success I’ve attained is the development of patience within self. I have transformed into a patient woman.
