At least more than one thousands staffers were sacked by the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) Plc, a sacked worker has said.
The sacked staff told our correspondent that JEDC had “at first fired 900 staffers for reasons best known to the management”.
He said, as at Tuesday, additional three hundred staff were scheduled for another sack, stressing that “no benefit was given to any of us and no explanation on whether we have committed any offence.”
He urged the management of JEDC to reconsider its decision and reinstate them back to work, or in the alternative pay them their benefits and monthly deduction of 30 per cent, which started since November, 2014.
According to him, staff of the company from Adamawa were being favoured, in terms of welfare and promotion.
He added that many more other senior staff were preparing to leave the company for fear of poor management.
JEDC, however, said the rationalization was due to several factors, including age and educational qualification, stressing that it was a normal process.
Head of Cooperate Communications department, Mr. Eliger Friday, said: “Some of the staffers were inherited by JEDC from the previous ownership and have spent over 60 years and the management felt that they are no longer productive.”
“Second, the management policy is that, staff must either be degree or HND holders, to enable them interface with our customers adequately because without education you cannot manage the customers, looking at the previous cases of failed customer-management relationship.
“We also have staffers who have spent 35years mandatory service and anagement felt that it is not fair to continue with them”, he added.
When asked to confirm the actual number of those sacked, Friday said the figures were not available to him.
