If Governor Rochas Okorocha knew that the N4 million he gave to Imo state students who had a solidarity march with him in support of his 2015 re-election yesterday would lead to a violent demonstration in which government property were destroyed, he would not have done that.
According to a very reliable source, the governor had after a successful outing given them the money to use to prepare a sumptuous meal, but the students who were drawn from the 27 local government areas of the state preferred to share the money amongst themselves and prevailed on the Governor’s Special Assistant on Students Matters nicknamed “the Governor” to do that.
But rather than sharing the money equitably, the SA decided to give the sum of N60, 000 to some recognised groups leaving others. This led to violent arguments and riots. The students destroyed the official car of the SA and went as far as destroying the fanciful street lights along major roads in Owerri Okorocha’s posters and other property found within his campaign headquarters on Okigwe road.
Later security operatives came in and took control of the town.
