High tension cable electrocutes 11- year- old in Calabar

The family of Bassey Isemin of Atamunu street in Calabar south local government area of Cross River state was thrown into mourning  weekend as high tension electricity wire of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) electrocuted their 11-year-old son, Godspower Bassey Isemin.

Reports say the boy was, while washing his clothes, leaning on the gate to their house when suddenly a high tension wire dramatically disengaged from an electric pole and landed on the gate and electrocuted him.

Godspower’s elder sister, who is an upcoming actress, Esther Whyte Bassey Isemin, who spoke to reporters from her base in Lagos, through her telephone lines Sunday, said the family had been thrown into mourning as no one envisaged such incident.

She said it was hard to believe his younger brother was no more, adding “I’m so broken. He didn’t deserve it. The last time I spoke with him, Godspower said he wanted me to be a star.”

An eyewitness, Usang Bassey, said the late Godspower was full of life before death snatched him away.

“The young boy was full of life and if someone had predicted he would die just like that, people would have stoned such a one.

“He was just leaning on the gate to wash his clothes and this time there was no light (power supply). When the PHED brought power, one of the wires on the pole by the gate fell and immediately seized the boy.

“It took efforts by Donald, his elder brother, the only one who was at home at the time to disengage him from the high-tension gate.

“Donald did all he could to save the life of his brother. He rushed him to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) but could not get immediate medical attention needed, only for a doctor to declare Godspower dead moments after,” he stated.
