Herders, farmers’ clash: It’s too late to break up Nigeria – Gbenga Daniel

A former governor of Ogun state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has stated that the clamour for the breakup of Nigeria owing to the incessant killings occasioned by herders, farmers’ clashes and sundry challenges is pretty too late.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who stated this over the Weekend when members of the 100 Women Lobby Group paid him an advocacy visit at his home in Sagamu, Ogun state said “there is more that unites the nation, than what divides it.”

The two term former governor further reiterated that the country is a great country with nine lives, having overcome different challenges since independence owing to the resilience of it people.

He said; “Nigeria is a great country with nine lives. Some people are saying we should divide, but I think it’s pretty too late. And why I said so is that all this division that people are talking about is because we have not gotten our acts right.

“Ogun state is one state, but if you know the battle here, there has been agitation for everyone to go their separate way; like Ijebu state, Egba state and all sorts.

“What is important is that, what are those things that unite us; let us emphasise on them against whatever that disunites us.”

Speaking earlier, the state coordinator of the group, Prof Olubunmi Ashimolowo lauded the efforts of the former governor at placing women in political positions during his tenure, adding that given the right atmosphere, women can move the country to the next level.

“I also remember then that we had the very first female Speaker of the House of Assembly during your tenure. You had a lot of women in your cabinet even at the local government level. So, you are an important stakeholder in the upliftment of women in the society,” she stated.
