Happening now: Anxiety as Appeal Court delivers judgement in Plateau governorship election

With the Court of Appeal expected to deliver judgement on Plateau state gubernatorial election dispute on Sunday day, residents and political gladiators are gearing up for what the outcome will be.

While the tribunal had upheld the elections of Plateau state Governor Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the sacking of all lawmakers elected on his party’s platform by the appellate court further heightened tension in the state over whether or not the governor would survive the tsunami.

The Court will deliver judgment in the appeal filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the State, challenging the victory of Governor Mutfwang.

Goshwe is challenging the victory of Governor Mutfwang on the ground that the latter was not qualified to have contested the election because he was not validly sponsored and nominated by his political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run in the March 18 2023 polls.

He insisted that the PDP lacked structure and was not qualified to sponsor any candidate in an election, alleging that Mutfwang’s poll was not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act and therefore did not win the majority of lawful votes cast during the election.

Meanwhile, armed soldiers on Sunday cordoned off different locations in Jos, the Plateau state capital, including the Court of Appeal comple.

The soldiers who positioned their armoured tank in front of the court complex also stationed themselves in different strategic locations of the city alongside other security operatives.
