Hang corrupt officials, Army Gen advocates

A retired general in the Nigerian army at the ongoing national conference, Gen Godfrey Ejiga has advocated death by hanging for convicted corrupt people in the country.

According to Gen Ejiga, he had canvassed the same position in the 2005 national political reform conference and was vilified by people who said he made the proposal because of his military background.
The general from Benue state stated that corruption in Nigeria has assumed an unimaginable proportion and should not be treated with kid gloves.

The former military officer noted that the menace of corruption especially among public officers was in the realm of millions and has now moved to billions saying that at the rate the monster is going, it would soon hit trillions of naira.
General Ejiga stated that a country like China has made tremendous progress because it was quick to realise that the death by hanging would discourage corrupt officials in the country.

Earlier, one of the representatives of the youths at the conference, Mr Ben Dutoye had also called for capital punishment for people convicted of corruption noting that the vice if left unchecked would continue to threaten the county’s economic development.
He said corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation, saying that only capital punishment should be key in fighting the menace.
