Flood aftermath: Bayelsa government shuts down camps, IDPs return home

The Bayelsa state government has said it has closed down the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in ox bow lake and resettled  households in Yenagoa and other parts of the state.

Hon. Ebiouw Koko Obiyal who spoke at the official closing of the ox bow lake IDP camp on Saturday in Yenagoa said the feat was achieved following the receding of the flood waters in the state.

She said the households were displaced in October by the flood that ravaged the whole of the state.

Nearly one million people in over 300 communities in the state, were internally displaced.

Unfortunately, deaths were also reported, in most parts of the state across Sagbama, Ekeremor, Southern Ijaw, Ogbia, Yenagoa, Nembe and Kolokuma Opokuma Local Government Areas.

Businesses were shut, properties lost and farmlands destroyed.

Reviewing the activities of the camp, Hon. Koku-Obiyai said there were over 12,000 IDPs in the camp, stressing that the state government fed them daily for the 26 days the camping lasted without any death recorded.
