The immediate past dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Professor Alfred Akinbo Adegoke, has described education as the master key for nation development
A statement made available to Blueprint in Abuja, stated that Adegoke made the point in a keynote address at the 10th Annual National Conference and Anniversary of the Association of Sociologists of Education of Nigeria (ASEN) at the University Auditorium.
Speaking on the theme: “Education for Sustainable Development”, Adegoke defined sustainable development as “development that meets today’s challenges without jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet future challenges”.

He added that three key concepts of environment, economy and society were principal considerations in sustainable development.
“Sustainable development must involve women, meet today’s challenges in a way that does not jeopardise ability to meet future needs and must be people-focused.
“In sustainable development, technological solutions are not enough. Political regulations or financial provisions are on their own not enough. We need to reform our thinking pattern and that is where education comes in”, he said.
Adegoke pointed out that to get sustainable development, you need to change attitude of people and re-echo societal values.
Adegoke, who is currently the President of Counselors’ Association of Nigeria, explained that “studies have shown that education improves agricultural productivity, improves status of women and youths, helps women to manage family size better and improves generally the quality of life”.
