Elections: CSOs caution judiciary on ‘controversial’ court orders

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSO) has said the country’s judiciary was involved in electoral litigations in a manner that weakened the credibility of the electoral system by issuing perplexed orders.

The Convener Clement Nwankwo, Alternate Chairs Y.Z Yau and Esther Uzoma in a joint speech ahead of the supplementary elections told newsmen at the weekend that they were worried about the trend and damaging respect for the courts and justice system in Nigeria as well as its derogatory stance on the credibility of elections.

They also called on security agencies invited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to assist with the conduct of the supplementary elections to be non-partisan and professional manner.

“As the 2019 general elections concludes , Situation Room will be observing the supplementary governorship elections to be conducted by the INEC in Bauchi , Benue , Kano , Plateau and Sokoto states.

“Situation Room and it partner Organisations will be deploying observers to the Polling Units where elections will be conducted and follow-up with the collation of results,” they said.
