Confab must not be an exercise in futility – NLC

By Umar Bayo Abdulwahab

Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and a delegate to national conference, Comrade Isa Aremu, has urged the federal government not to make the efforts of the conference an exercise in futility by not implementing it recommendations.
He said: “There are some recommendations that are policy issues that are straight-forward that should be handled by the executive, while there are some legislative issues that require constitutional amendment arising from our recommendations.”
The NLC vice-president, who spoke to journalists in Ilorin, said the federal government must demonstrate the required political will to implement policy issues, because, according to him, “that is within the control of the executive.”
“I want to call on the federal government particularly the President that set up this conference to make sure that we walk out or talk this time around.
“There are policy issues that are straight-forward that should be handled by the executive; there are some legislative issues that require constitutional amendment arising from our recommendations. All those ones dealing with policy issues, government must demonstrate the political will to implement them because that is within the control of the executive.
“The challenge is how to translate these recommendations to implementation but that requires the cooperation between the conference leadership as well as the executive arm of government and of course the National Assembly that has the overriding authority because they are the people elected to make laws for us.”
