Colleague’s murder: 2 UniAbuja students get N5m bail

Two students of University of Abuja (UniAbuja) arraigned before Justice Mohammed Idris of FCT High Court, Nyanya, over the death of their school mate, Emmanuel Balogun, have been granted bail.

Christian Francis, 17; and David Ogwu, 16; were charged on three count of culpable homicide, conspiracy, and withholding information.

Justice Idris granted bail to the accused, who had pleaded not guilty to the charge, to the tune of N5 million each bail in response to the prayer of their Counsel, Mr M.O Onyilokwu.

He ordered the defendants to produce one surety each, who must not be below the level of an assistant director in a federal civil service.

The surety must have landed property in Abuja and must swear to affidavit of means while the defendants must deposit their travelling documents with the court, the justice further ordered.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Dabo Yakubu, told the court on July 3, when the accused were arraigned, that the defendants, Francis and Ogwu, conspired between to commit the offence on April 27.

He said the 100 level students of University of Abuja, went to the Dome Hotel Abuja for a pool party and alongside their school mate, Balogun (now deceased).

Yakubu said they entered the pool together to swim but when the defendants noticed that their colleague had drowned, they swan out of the pool, dressed up and left to school.

He further alleged that the defendants failed to inform staff of the hotel that the deceased does not know how to swim and failed to report his death.
