Coalition mulls Bill to enforce federal character

Coalition of Northern Groups has expressed its determination to collaborate to sponsor a Bill for the enforcement of observance of the Federal Character principles by private businesses, financial institutions and banks operating in Kano state.
Addressing journalists in Kano yesterday, the National Coordinator of the Coalition, Malam Balarabe Rufai, condemned the “deliberate non-adherence to the stipulations of the federal character provision,” adding that the Coalition would no longer accept the deliberate act.
Rufai also expressed the resolve of the Coalition to initiate series of actions and campaigns allowable by the law to ensure that indigenes of Kano enjoyed as a right not less than 70% of job opportunities in all private businesses, financial institutions and banks operating in the state.
According to him, a lopsided monopoly of opportunities could be found in the National Health Insurance Scheme and Securities and Exchange Commission, stressing that “in further violation of the federal character requirements, the people of Kano have been denied the percentage of the employment ratio in all private companies, financial institutions and banks located in the state.”
He disclosed that the Coalition “has planned to liaise with all the legislators from Kano to sponsor a bill for the total ban, manufacture, distribute, retail and consumption of illicit drugs and the identification of harmful substance in the state.”
He noted that a huge expectation had been placed on the shoulders of the Senate to effect a number of legal amendments to provide the enabling framework for the relevant arms of government and agencies to conveniently tackle the menace of drug abuse.
