Benue: Defection hits PDP, chieftains dump party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue state has been hit with depletion as its stalwarts are set to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in honour of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

Notable personalities who will be leading thousands of their supporters to the APC  include Prince Yandeve Amaabai, National Ex-officio (NEC Member PDP), Hon. James Mbakorlumun Chia, State Vice Chairman PDP Zone B, Hon. Livinus Awuhe (former PDP State Vice Chairman Zone B), Hon. Asema Raymond Naago (MINDA PDP youth Leader), Hon Joyce Tarka, former Special Adviser to Benue state governor, Dr. Peter Damkor, PDP Stalwart Gwer East, Hon. Terfa Labe, former PDP Youth Leader, Gwer East and Sir Frank Aul-Mku (rtd) Director SEC and former Reps aspirant, Gboko/Tarka.

But in a reaction to the planned defection, the Benue state chapter of the PDP in a statement issued Wednesday said the party was aware of the departure to the All Progressives Congress (APC) of two of its officials.

The statement, which was signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, said it would replace Hon. Vincent Yandev Amaabai, a National Ex-officio; and Hon. Mbakorlumun James Chia, State Vice-Chairman for Benue North-West senatorial district who are decamping.

“Both officials have been listed to be received into the ruling APC at a ceremony slated for tomorrow, 4th January, 2024, and the party wishes them well in their continuing political foraging.

“PDP understands that migration of politicians of a particular kind from the opposition to the ruling party has become a common feature of our politics, and sees nothing unusual about this current episode of it.

“Our great party will, in line with its laws, fill up their vacated positions with competent hands in the shortest time,” the statement reads in part.
