Bafarawa urges respect for constitution, assures on good governance

A former Governor of Sokoto state and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential aspirant, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, has called for the promotion of “true democracy” in the country.
Bafarawa made the call yesterday in Abuja while briefing journalists on his presidential ambition, saying that “democracy can be achieved when the Constitution guiding the conduct of affairs in the country and even that of political parties is strictly adhered to.” He lamented the “kind of politics in Nigeria today,” stressing that the nation “is not moving forward as it should because it has been turned into a business venture.” He also called for independence of the National Assembly, stressing that “they are independent bodies with constitutional rights whose powers are even more than the executive arm.” “Unlike before when politics is meant for development, it is now a small scale industry where people make money out of it.
“It is only in politics that you find people starting career from the top to the bottom, buying positions because they can afford it and not necessarily because it is their career and that is why we are not moving forward towards democracy,” he said.
Continuing, he said: “Political parties should be supreme and supervise what any government is doing because the leader is supposed to lead according to party’s manifesto and not as an individual agenda.” On his presidential ambition, he assured of commitment to the dividends of democracy through good management which, he said, “is a prerequisite to good government.” “Nigeria is not poor; all we lack is good leadership and government.
When I was a governor I inherited only 20 million, but before I left office I left almost 12 billion for the incoming government so good management brings good government and that’s what I am bringing on board.
“As a governor for eight years, I know the good records I achieved; and that is why I aspire to lead at the national level.
