Army launches exercise Ayem Akpatuma II in Benue

The Nigeria Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Tukur Buratai Friday launched Exercise (Ex) A KPATUMA II in Benue to curb the rising cases of crime such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, banditry and communal clashes.

Buratai, who was represented by the Chief of Army Logistics, Major General Joel Unuigbe, said Exercise Ayem Akpatuma II would be conducted from November 1, to December 23, 2019.

He noted that the exercise would be conducted in conjunction with other security agencies operating in the area.

According to him, code of Conduct and rules of engagements have been drawn up, which will guide the conduct of troops throughout the duration of the Exercise.

“Troops are therefore expected to conduct themselves in the most professional way that is expected of all Nigeria Army personnel. The Army will not condone any act of human rights abuse by the troops involved in this exercise,” he added.

He warned criminal elements in the state covered by the Exercise to desist from their criminal acts surrender their weapons or will be met with decisive appropriate force.

He further advised the general public to go about their legitimate duties and promptly pass useful information of criminal activities to security agencies for appropriate action.

On his part, the Benue state Governor Samuel Ortom said the exercise was a welcome development considering the rising cases of crime especially kidnapping in the state.

He said a retired Appeal Court Judge Tine Tur, whose burial holds Saturday, died as a result of trauma he suffered after his was wife was kidnapped and killed by criminals in the state.
