Akwa Ibom: Women council condemns forceful marriage, deprivation of inheritance

The Director-General, National Council for Women Development (NCWD), Abuja, Dr. Asabe Bashir, has condemned cultural practices that do not guarantee the well-being of women and girls in the country.

She stated this during a 2-day legal literacy workshop for key stakeholders for the elimination of gender discrimination practices in Nigeria on Monday in Uyo.

Blueprint reports that the event was organised by the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja, in collaboration with Federal Character Commission, Abuja.

Bashir, represented by director, Planning Research and Statistics, Mr. Emmanuel Onilearo, stated that girl- child forceful marriage and the deprivation of inheritance from women should be stopped.

“We need to be aware of what to do to protect our women and girls against such culture and practices that support the beating of women as a way of correcting them.

“All these must change to pave way for the advancement of women and children in Nigeria,” she added.

The commissioner, FCC, Obonganwan Deborah Ebong, urged women across Nigeria to begin to initiate talks with their parents on family inheritance while they are alive to avoid being victimised after their demise.

She decried the high level of discrimination against women when coming to the sharing of inheritance, adding that women have every right to own a family inheritance.
