The member representing Uruan State Constituency, Mr Aniekan Bassey has emerged Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
Bassey, a two-term lawmaker, emerged through a consensus arrangement after a stiff contest by three other contestants namely Mr Aniekan Uko(Ibesikpo Asutan), Mr Mark Esset(Nsit Atai) and a first time lawmaker Mr Anietie Eka(Uyo).
Mrs Felicia Bassey of Okobo state constituency was reelected deputy Speaker while other principal officers of the dissolved 6th Assembly would maintain their positions.
Sources say the emergence of the new leadership of the 7th assembly was characterized by intense scheming and power play among some political blocs within the Peoples Democratic Party and the reelected lawmakers.
Governor Udom Emmanuel and the PDP hierarchy is said to have favourably disposed to the new Speaker.
