In order to ensure transparency and accountability in public service, the Adamawa state government is set to begin implementation of new audit laws 2016 approved by the House of Assembly.

Consequently, the state government through the Office of the Auditor General in conjunction with state Public Sector Governance Reform and Development Project at the weekend organised a sensitisation workshop for all accounting officers in various ministries and MDAs to educate them on the new law.
Speaking at the event in Yola, the state’s Head of Service, Barrister Musa Kaibo, said the new law would go a long way in entrenching the “culture of transparency and accountability in running the affairs of government.”

He advised politicians to always allow accounting officers and civil servants to do their jobs in conformity with stipulated law and civil service rules, saying that “no matter how long it takes, one day they would be called upon to answer questions on their activities even out of office.”
Also speaking, the lead resource person and the facilitator at the workshop, Mr. Patrick Kode, called on the accounting officers to resist all pressures from politicians “who may want to influence or force them to do anything in gross violations of the law and regulations governing their official responsibilities.”

“The law is not a respecter of anybody; hence the need for political office holders to always abide by due process and financial regulations in carrying out their activities in the overall interest of the public they are serving,” he said.
On his part, Auditor General, Ibrahim Gurin, said the workshop was aimed at educating the participants on the new law and what was expected of them.
