$620m bribe: Court warns Lawan, Emenalo over ‘delay tactics’

Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Gudu, Abuja, has warned former Chairman, House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy Regime and its ex-Secretary, Farouk Lawan, and Boniface Emenalo, to desist from employing “delay tactics” in the defence of their case.
She gave the warning yesterday at the resumed hearing of the matter after counsel to the defendants; Mr. Akinyemi Aremu, drew the court’s attention to a pending motion on stay of proceedings at the Court of Appeal.
He urged the court to grant an adjournment to enable parties report back to the court on level of development made at the Court of Appeal.
Earlier, lead prosecution counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, said he had been served with the pending motion at the Appeal Court, but expressed displeasure over the pending application.
He, however, did not oppose the pending application owing to the hierarchy of courts.
After listening to counsel’s submissions, Justice Banjoko said: “This is a classic case of delay tactics by the defendants’ counsel. I would urge lawyers to rely on their competence rather than employ delay tactics in the defence of their cases.”
She adjourned to October 28 and 29 for report of appeal and or definite hearing.
