Court remands 3 persons for alleged kidnapping in Osun

26-year-old Osu Joy, his boyfriend, Sidney Onwuka, and a Nurse, Agubata Maxwell, have been remanded by a court in Ilesa prison for alleged conspiracy and kidnapping.

Joy and her 28-year-old boyfriend, Onwuka, were alleged to have stolen a 2-year-old Abdullahi Azeez in Osogbo and sold to Maxwell in Oweri, Imo state.
Maxwell, a 39-year-old man, claimed to be a Nurse, operating a motherless baby home in Oweri.
When the police paraded the accused recently, Joy and Onwuka told the police that they have sold six children including their two children.
They confessed that they stole Abdullahi and sold to Maxwell at N450,000. Maxwell was said to have sold the baby to a mother of six females, Eze Elizabeth, at N800,000 with the help of a Reverend Father of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic, Ogwojiafor Chike.
When the case came up in court on Wednesday, Joy, Onwuka and Maxwell were arraigned for conspiracy and kidnapping.
The State Counsel, Mr Muyiwa Ogunleye, told the court that the accused persons committed the offense on February 18 at about 8:00 pm, along Matanmi area, Oke-Baale, Osogbo.
According to the charge sheet, the alleged offense contravened sections 516, 371, and 364(2) of the criminal code cap 34 Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2003.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge preferred against them.
Their Counsel, Dr. Victor Ezeji, urged the court to grant his clients bail in the most liberal terms, insisting that they are presumed to be innocent by law, until contrarily proved.
But, Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, rejected oral application and directed the counsel to address the court with a formal application.
He ordered the accused to be remanded in prison and adjourned to May 18, for mentioning of the case.
