UNICEF tasks Adamawa, others on child rights law

Adamawa state government and others yet to domesticate the Nigeria Child Rights Law 2003 have been urged to ensure compliance.
The Chief of UNICEF, Bauchi Field Office, Dr Abdulai Kaikai, made the call in a statement issued in Yola yesterday the Communication Officer Media & External Relations, Mr. Samuel Kaalu.

Kaikai said passage of the law would ensure the protection of children in the state, noting that so far, 24 out of 36 states had domesticated the law.
He added that one-third of the 12 states yet to domesticate the law fell within the area of coverage of the UNICEF, Nigeria Bauchi Field Office zone.

He listed Adamawa, Bauchi, Jigawa and Gombe as the affected states yet to domesticate the law.
Kaikai also tasked the states on girl-child education as a major key to empowerment and equal opportunity as it would help to build their capacity to stand up for themselves.
“By educating girls, practices such as early marriage will be uprooted and girls will be empowered to contribute to the development of their communities, states and Nigeria,” he said.
