SWAN hails, wants Rivers United to aim for CAF Confederation Cup title finish

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Monday called on the remaining Nigeria’s football club, Rivers United, at the ongoing CAF interclub competition to brace up and remain resolute they hit the final and possibly lift league title.

Speaking after the Port Harcourt-based side qualified for the quarter-final stage of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, who commended their performance so far reckoned that they have recent times showed grit amidst outstanding display.

“As Sports Writers, we are very elated by the performance of Rivers United in the CAF Confederation Cup. This is not the first time they have reached this stage of the competition.

“This time, they have been able to surmount all hurdles to secure two straight victories against their Angolan and Ghanaian opponents in the just concluded group stage of the club competition in a commendable manner.

“We thumps up the state government led by Governor Sim Fubara and Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Barr. Chris Green as well as the management, technical crew and players of the club for being focused,” a statement by SWAN Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo said.

The statement further revealed that the number one Sports Writer in Nigeria also tasked Rivers United to dare the odds in a bid to surpass their previous record in the competition.
