Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Monday that a clear cut set of strategies to curb and curtail the proliferation of small and light weapons would be developed soon.
The vice president said this at the inaugural meeting of the committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to review report of the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PRESCOM) constituted in April 2013 by the then federal government.
The review committee is made up of top security chiefs and members of the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Speaking at the meeting, Osinbajo called for the development of a clear cut and specific line of action to address the problems of small arms and light weapons many of which fuel the current insurgency in the North-east and other security challenges in the country.
He said the seriousness of the matter had necessitated the setting up of the review committee.
He said the president is keen on effective and prompt solutions to the problem of proliferation of small and light arms in the country.
Members of the review committee at the meeting were the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (retired); Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami; Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama; Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu; and the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retired).
Others include Director General of National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Usman; Chairman of PRESCOM, Ambassador Emmanuel Imohe; and the representatives of Director General of State Security Service (SSS) and Ministry of Defence.
