Redesigned notes: Enforce directive to banks, Emir tells CBN officials

The Emir of Hadejia Alhaji Adamu Abubakar Maje, has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to enforce it’s directive to banks to load their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) with new redesigned naira notes. 

Alhaji Maje, who be made the appeal at a town hall meeting with official of the CBN officials Friday in  Hadejia, Jigawa state, added that many banks in the State capital were not complying with the Apex Bank’s directive. 

“CBN should address banks to immediately comply to the policy by given out new currency,” the royal father said. 

The Emir, who was represented by senior councilor of his palace and Galadima Hadejia Alhaji AbdulAziz Zakari , while commending the regulators effort at enlightening  Nigerians urged residents to take their old N200, N500, and N1000 notes to bank or POS and get the new ones before January 31st 2023. 

The Central Banks has directed Deposit Money Banks to load new redesigned notes in their ATMs, just as banks have been directed to work on Saturday for the purpose of receiving old notes of N200, N500, and N1000 before December 31, 2023. 

Speaking, Director, Human Resources of the Apex Bank, Hajiya Amina Habib, said the benefits of the currency redesigned to Nigerian economy are enormous given that; ” this policy will help to control inflation as the exercise will bring the hoarding currency into the banking system, thereby making monetary policy more effective”

“It will also help with better designed and implementation of monetary policy as we would have much more accurate data on money supply and monetary aggregate.”

“We believe that this exercise would help in increasing financial inclusion, moving towards a more cashless economy, and ensuring greater formalization of the Nigerian economy.”

Also speaking to worshippers at the  Yalleman Tijjanai Friday Mosque, Head Development Finance of the Bank, Mr. Abdu Amadu, warned that their inability to deposit their old notes in the bank would lead to loss on their part. 

Mr Abdu Amadu urged them to patronise bank share agents and Point Of Sales (POS) and other service provider certified by the central bank.

“Today is 20th, it’s remains only 11 days from today, so the time is very limited considering the importance and urgency needed to avoid any lost of their moneys”.

The central bank team earlier met with the Point Of Sales (POS) operators and sensitized them of and extra responsibilities for opening bank account and depositing moneys to the people and customers.
