Red Cross trains Yobe journalists in first aid

To strengthen humanitarian reporting and ensure accurate dissemination of information, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Tuesday organised a three-day First Aid training program for journalists and media chiefs at the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS),Yobe branch office.

During the opening ceremony, the head of office of the ICRC, Damaturu, Mohammed Abdul Rashid, stated the crucial role journalists play in raising awareness about the humanitarian services provided by the Red Cross in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of accurate reporting to prevent misinformation and disinformation in relation to humanitarian crises and conflicts.

Rashid urged journalists to fact-check their information before publishing, as this would contribute to reducing the spread of false information. He stated that journalists are instrumental in propelling information to the public, which allows humanitarian actors to provide the necessary support and services required.

The First Aid training program aims to equip journalists with the skills to become first responders in addition to their primary responsibility of providing information.

The ICRC recognises the journalists’ frontline role in conflict situations, where they often find themselves providing immediate assistance before victims are taken to hospitals for further treatment.

Blueprint correspondent reports that the training program will cover not only first aid techniques but also operational communication, enabling journalists to effectively communicate and report on humanitarian crises and emergencies.
