Police require N8.6bn recruit 10,000 freshers –Okiro

Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Sir Mike Okiro has disclosed about N8.6 billion naira is required to carry out the recruitment of 10,000 new personnel into the Nigeria Police in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy directive.
Okiro  made the disclosure yesterday at a stakeholders’ public hearing organized by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Police Affairs, specifically on update of the Commission’s plans to implement the directive, as well as addressing issues of extra judicial killing, kidnapping and other crimes in the country.

President Buhari had on August 17 last year, at a National Security Summit in Abuja issued a directive that 10,000 new personnel be recruited into the Police Force with a view to repositioning and strengthening it, but Okiro explained that the exercise was being slowed down by the ongoing renovation of police training institutions, which are expected to be ready by June.

Okiro while giving breakdown of the financial requirement for the recruitment exercise explained that N339,473,092.50 would be expended on overhead, N1,892,891.25 for advertisement and N1,167,000.00 on technical resources. Also, he noted that N179,000,000.00 would be for the renovation of training institutions, N3,489,750,000.00 for feeding, N2,835,441,000.00 for allowances and salaries, N1,013,550,000.00 for accoutrement and N118,290,000.00 for teaching aids.

Others areas he noted were arms and ammunition for shooting range which would take N450,000,000.00, teaching allowance; N61,266,281.00 and N117,958,719.00 for monitoring and evaluation, bringing the total amount N8,607,788,983.75.
Declaring the event open, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara gave the assurance that the parliament would provide legislative backing for measures aimed at addressing the national security challenges, urging transparency in the planned exercise.
