Police arrest suspected kidnapper in Gombe

The Gombe state police command has arrested one Mohammed Sani Ahmed, 19, of Gabukka Quarter in a case of kidnapping of a 7-year-old boy, Hassan Abubakar of Kumbiya-Kumbiya Quarters in the state capital.

The state police public relation officer, SP Obed Mary Malum, stated this while parading the suspects in Gombe Thursday, said they were traced and arrested by the command’s special anti-robbery squad on 23 September 2019, adding that during the course of interrogation, the said suspects confessed to the crime.

“He went to Kumbiya-Kumbiya quarters Gombe where he saw the victim in a mosque performing ablution and sent him to buy a sachet of pure water for him. While on the way, he followed the boy and picked him on a motorcycle to his house. He hid the victim for two days and thereafter demanded for ransom of the sum of N3.5 million from the father of the victim before he could be released,” she said.

“When he saw that the ransom was not forthcoming, he decided to call one Aminu Babayo, the uncle of the victim telling him that he has seen the boy that was kidnapped, abandoned at Gabukka Quarters. Aminu now pleaded with him to bring the boy to Gabukka Quarters to the victim’s grandfather’s house so that he can be appreciated.

“While jubilation was on-going, the father of the victim observed that the mobile number used in demanding for the ransom of N3.5 million was the same number used in calling the victim’s uncle that the kidnapped child has been found.”

She said the father then called SARS operatives, who arrested the suspect. Meanwhile, investigation is on-going and suspect will soon be charged to court for prosecution.
