NULGE threatens mass protest over NASS’ plan to delist 774 LGs

The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has concluded plans to embark on a mass protest against members of the National Assembly planning to delist local government councils as third tier of government from the constitution.

National President of NULGE, Comrade Ambali Akeem Olatunji, told journalists Sunday in Abuja that the union had written to Speaker of the House of Representatives to express their displeasure over what they described as “the anti-people bill” seeking for discussion with the lawmakers on the matter.

He said the union which is open to dialogue on the matter would not hesitate to pull out her members for a shutdown should such bill scale through.

Comrade Olatunji berated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers from Rivers state for sponsoring such a bill when their Governor Nyesom Wike was a product of LG as well as a local government chairman.

“We also know that this is a serious challenge to local government, and we are saying this, very soon if we engage them (NASS) and the leadership is not doing what is needful, we might direct our members to shut down the country in all the 774 local government, but we hope that they will not allow it to degenerate to that level.

“Once you delist local government as a tier of government, it shows that you have killed local government. Even, now that the local government remains a tier of government, the governors are pauperising local government and there are a lot of swindling of local government funds.”
