Nomadic education: NCNE commences development of teachers’ guides in 3 subjects

The National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), Monday, commenced a four-day workshop for the review/development of teachers’ guides in three subject areas, including Islamic Religious Studies (IRS), Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and History for the education of pastoralists and migrant fisherfolk/farmers.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of (NCNE), Prof. Bashir H. Usman, said the workshop was borne out of the desire to ensure that nomadic teachers were fully guided to improve the quality of teaching and learning in nomadic schools.

He said: “The current effort of providing basic education to a large population of nomads in Nigeria underscores the importance of this workshop. Recently, we were here in November last year to critique the developed pupil’s texts, which paved way for the development of teachers’ guides for the education of nomadic pastoralists, migrant fisherfolk and farmers.

“The need to continuously up-date the textual materials for our target groups is a matter of great concern to the Commission. This is because the emerging issues in the various subject areas would be addressed, and ensure that nomadic textual materials meet the national educational standards.

“The conduct of this workshop is borne out of the desire to ensure that nomadic teachers are fully guided to improve the quality of teaching and learning in nomadic schools. It is also, part of our effort at addressing the noticeable poor learning outcomes associated with teachers.

“It is worthy to remind us that teacher’s guides provide a structured pedagogical framework in classroom with comprehensive and continually optimised instructions to transform learning outcomes.”

Also speaking, the Head of Department, Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. (Mrs) Rose Nwaji, who was represented by the Chief Education Officer of NCNE, Mrs Ismaila Oluwaseyi Bukola, said the Commission decided to embark on the development of teacher’s guides to assist the teacher to deliver the contents to the pupils effectively.

On his part, a lecturer in the Department of History, Kaduna State University, Prof Abdullahi Ashafa, advised the federal government to provide funds for the review of additional subjects, even as he charged participants to do their best in delivering quality guidelines for teachers.
