NLNG injects $2bn into varsity education

Nigeria liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) yesterday in Abuja donated $2 billion to six federal universities from the Nigeria liquefied natural gas education intervention fund.

The six universities are Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, Nsukka, Zaria and Maiduguri. Each of them would get $2 million for the construction of state of the art Engineering Laboratory.
NLNG Managing Director, Mr. Babs Omotowa, who briefed the press, said the company also remitted N220 billion as income tax to the federation account for the year 2013.

According to him, the NLNG makes a yearly contribution of $9 billion into the national GDP, which accounts for four per cent of the nation’s GDP.
He said: “The universities were selected based on their performance within the six geopolitical regions using rankings by the national universities commission, NUC, and other international bodies, as well their long standing contributions to Nigeria through the development of local capacity.”

On how the money would be shared and completion time, Omotowa said: “Each of the six universities will get an equal amount of N340 million and from date of commencement of the project in each of the universities, we expect to deliver within 12 months.”
The vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who represented other vice chancellors in his remarks, said the funds would be judiciously used.
He expressed appreciation to NLNG for the intervention in the education sector.
