NIDCOM boss commiserates with family of Nigerian killed in South Africa

The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has condoled with the family of a Nigerian, Mr Michael Chima Echefu, who was shot and killed by yet to be identified robbers in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A press statement by NIDCOM, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Friday in Abuja, said Dabiri-Erewa in a condolence to the family assured of proper investigation into the matter with the hope of arresting those behind the dastardly act.

She commended the prompt intervention of the Nigerian Consul General in South Africa, Mr Andrew Idi, who promptly visited the bereaved family and provided necessary support for the repatriation of the deceased’s remains back to Nigeria.

Dabiri-Erewa urged the South African authorities to see to the logical conclusion of the matter by fishing out those behind Echefu’s murder so it won’t be like previous unresolved cases of Nigerians murdered in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the murder of Echefu, a native of Amaigbo, Imo state, in his shop located at Rissik and Jeppe Street, Johannesburg, was announced in a statement by the Secretary-General, the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), Kazeem Babatunde.

The association said the unfortunate incident happened on Monday, June 27, 2022. According to eye witness account, the deceased was shot and killed by a South African robbery gang after robbing him at gun point in his shop.

The statement by NICASA said the deceased was shot twice in the head by one of the gang members when he  attempted to flee the robbery scene.

An investigation into the incidence is ongoing, however, no arrest has been made, the association stated.

Late Echefu is survived by his wife; Ugochi Echefu and three children.
