Nasarawa assembly wants due process in creation of chiefdoms, districts

The Nasarawa state House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has advised the state government to respect due process when creating district and village areas.

The chairman of the committee, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim-Alkali, gave the advice Thursday in Lafia, when the Ministry of Local Government, Community and Chieftaincy Affairs and the Local Government Service Commission, defended their 2020 budgets proposals.

He said that the advice had become imperative considering the importance of peace to societal development.

“Peace is priceless and non-negotiable; government must follow due process in creating chiefdoms in view of the massive interest such issues usually generate.

“I want to advise you to engage stakeholders, do proper consultation and public hearing, while creating district and village areas and chiefdoms, in the interest of peace and harmony.

“We don’t want any crisis, tension or uprising after the creation of chiefdoms, district and village areas in the state.

“It is in view of this that we want to advise you to do the needful by making proper consultations with relevant stakeholders when creating chiefdoms, district and village areas, in the interest of peace and development,” he said.

Ibrahim-Alkali also advised the ministry and the commission to diligently supervise the activities of local government councils to ensure effective service delivery

He assured the duo of the assembly’s readiness to give adequate support toward the success of their activities and programmes.

Earlier, the ministry’s commissioner and a member of the commission, Alhaji Yusuf Aliyu-Turaki and Mr Isah Joseph, had assured the committee of their willingness to do the needful at all times while discharging their duties.
