NABDA sensitises medical practitioners on GM products

As part of effort to provide accurate and up to date information about advances in the Genetically Modify Products since its adoption in Nigeria, the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), has commenced sensitisation of Medical practitioners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The one-day training workshop that held at the Dennis Hotel, Abuja on Wednesday, had several members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) FCT chapter in attendance.

Declaring the workshop open, the Director General/CEO, National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, said medical practitioners are at the forefront of patient care, hence it is essential that they are equip with the latest knowledge and information on GMOs and their products.

He said the workshop aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the science behind genetic modification and its role in modern medicine, its potential benefits in agricultural productivity and food nutrition as well as the regulatory procedures being followed to ensure the safety of the emerged products.

According to Mustapha, modern biotechnology practice, which uses genetic modification tool, will provide safer, cheaper, better quality, less waste, less energy, more environmentally friendly and more sustainable products.
