‘Delayed’ Cabinet constitution: Labour Leader hits govs

A Labour Unionist and President the Nigerian Workers Group, Comrade (Dr), Kayode Ehindero, on Monday cautioned state governors in the country from turning themselves to sole administrators.

According to the unionist six months after they have been sworn-in as the state’s helmsmen, some of the governors are yet to form their cabinet; rather they were calling shot all alone like a sole administrator.

Constituting cabinets in his view was what makes governance democratic, insisting that anything less should be discouraged by NASS and the citizenry as a whole.

Ehindero who described the situation as breach of the constitution added that he was particularly worried that like President Buhari did during his first term in office, the scenario has now trickled down to states, stating that the scourge is gradually becoming a culture in the country.

“In some state in Nigeria today, they are yet to constitute their cabinets and you begin to wonder what was actually going on,” he said.

“It looks as if some of these governors are finding it difficult to appoint commissioners and for some of us, it is taken too long already.

“You still wondered because they campaigned along with some party men and supporters who by our own views are qualified to be nominated as cabinet members. For us, this culture pervading the political parlance is not good for the country and even our nascent democracy.

On our part, we had ventilated our position on the matter by telling them that it was not right. We have particularly expressed our reservations to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara state.

Subsequently, information at our disposal revealed that the governor has done the needful by sending some names to the state assembly for consideration as commissioner nominees.

Ehindero nevertheless urged other governors who are yet to form their cabinet to emulate the Kwara governor, saying that time to hit the ground running is now.

“As part of their agendas, aspiring governors and candidates should know who they want to work with rather than trying to satisfied interest thereby delaying governance.

“They should not have this spirit of my government; we expect them to work with the state executive council because it is not an individual person that owns the government. More importantly, we should not encourage Sole Administratorship in a democratic government,” he warned.
