Lawmakers seek govt intervention on poor roads, erosion menace in Imo

Two lawmakers of the Imo State House of Assembly, Arthur Egwim representing Ideato North and Dominic Ezerioha of Oru West  State constituencies have complained of the deplorable states of their constituencies as a result of bad roads and erosion menace.

While moving a motion on the floor of the house, Hon Barr Egwim sought the support of his colleagues to urge the federal government to capture and rehabilitate Imo federal highways which have remained deplorable in the last few months, especially the one that passes through Orlu to Akokwa, the one from Owerri to Port Harcourt in Rivers state, and the one from Owerri to Mbaise and through Isi Nweke in Imo State.

He said it had become necessary to rehabilitate them now that bandits had held sway in the country to check their activities against innocent citizens.

Egwim who said the poor states of the roads had brought nightmare to the people, wondered whether the people of Imo state who have contributed immensely to the economic growth of the country should continue to call the country their own in the midst of neglect.

“Why are we being maneuvered or marginalized? Instead of doing what will better our lives, the federal government is talking of bringing Ruga settlement to us. Anyway that is a matter for another day. I am saying that these roads should be captured in the budget of the federal government to save lives and property of our people,” he said.

In his own motion, Hon Barr. Ezerioha pleaded with his colleagues to urge the governor, Chief Emeka Ihedioha to tackle the erosion problem which is threatening to cut off another federal government road in the state, the Owerri to Onitsha road, exactly at Mgbidi in his Oru West State constituency.

According to him, the menace destroys the eco-system in place and if unchecked, would prevent his constituents from having any dealings with the rest of the state as well as prevent people from the neighbouring states from coming into Imo state.

He said he was directing his motion to the governor since erosion control is one of the things a governor can do to alleviate the problem if his people.
