LASUTH first conjoined twins die

Tragedy struck at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital as first conjoined twins passed away due to congenital heart problems.

The management of LASUTH has reported the unfortunate demise of the conjoined twins born in their care.

A source said the twins were delivered on October 5, 2023 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with an estimated gestational age of 33 weeks and six days.

The hospital initially announced the successful delivery of the conjoined female babies, highlighting their good APGAR scores and a combined birth weight of 3.8kg.

“The twins were joined at the lower chest and abdomen, medically referred to as thoracic-omphalopagus, and were delivered by a multidisciplinary team.

The Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Professor Adetokunbo Fabamwo, stated that the twins had congenital heart issues that were not compatible with life.

Regrettably, the first twin passed away on October 15, and the second twin succumbed to the same condition on October 16.

Professor Fabamwo further stated that the complex nature of their joining and the presence of additional abnormalities in their bodies made their case particularly challenging.

He said despite prompt efforts to separate them by assembling a team of specialists from LASUTH and other hospitals, their conditions proved fatal.
