Kano confirms Lassa fever outbreak

Kano state commissioner of Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa has on Wednesday confirmed the outbreak of Lasser fever in Kano following the death of two male doctors and one female patient at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

Confirming the out-break at a press briefing in Kano , Tsanyawa said  following the outbreak, the Kano State government swung into action so as to expeditiously curtail  the spread of the viral disease.

According to him, the State government had in response to the dismal situation effected the activation of Rapid Response Team (RRT) and conducted  the State of Emergency Preparedness and Response Committee meeting in addition to repositioning of drugs and other consumables.

He added that  emergency measures have also been taken, including the engagement of traditional and religious institutions and the production  and airing of radio jingles adding that sensitization of health personnel and the production and distribution of IEC materials.

He said it is also on record that few years ago, Kano was able to manage and treat two (2)  confirmed cases of Lassa fever patients in the Isolation centre which were equally during a ceremony graced by stakeholders and key representatives of the state government.
