Hardship: Take up opportunities in agriculture, ICT, group advises youth

A non-governmental organisation, Caringhands Youths Initiative, has advised Nigerian youths to take up various opportunities in Agriculture and information technology in order to mitigate against the current economic challenges in the country.

The Ogun state Director of the group, Amb. Oluwakorede Egbeyemi stated this during a press briefing held at the NUJ secretariat, Iwe Iroyin Abeokuta.

Egbeyemi noted that to urgently address the nation’s high rate of crime and  unemployment, the youth must be positively engaged beyond the distribution of palliatives.

He therefore advised government to ensure agriculture and ICT becomes attractive in schools, with the right incentive for students to take it up as career.

“The goal is to transform the perception of agriculture from being seen as a profession for the idle to a respected and sought-after field.

“Many youth don’t want to be a farmer, they look at farming as a lay mans job but if we really engage and make agricultural science a more befitting subject in our society, the youth will see that there are more opportunity in agricultural sector.

“Many also view farming as an undesirable career, but by enhancing the status of agricultural science in our society, we believe more young people will discover the vast opportunities within the agricultural sector”, he said

Egbeyemi added that the motive of the initiative is to gathered and bring out the potentials in all youths for their betterment and the country’s advantage.

“This proposal aims to introduce and promote agricultural science at every educational level, from primary schools through to universities”, he said
