FIDA extols media commitment to women struggle, GBV eradication

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nigeria, has lauded the media for supporting the women struggle with constant reportage of issues affecting them such as domestic violence and child abuse cases, abduction, kidnapping and  Gender Based Violence (GBV).

The Country Vice President (CVP)/National President FIDA Nigeria, Amina Suzanah Agbaje, gave the commendation Tuesday in Abuja during a media parley held on the topic: “Media: The life saving trumpet of the vulnerable women and children in the society” in preparation to FIDA annual general conference.

Agbaje said the media has helped in causing the positive change of negative cultural norms and drew attention to abuses leading to arrest and prosecution of offenders, adding  that without the media, the challenges would remain hidden.

She stated the role of the media to change negative social norms on violence against women and girls and  raise awareness against the violence, shaping the public opinion and discourse in order to promote justice for survivors to influence behaviors including the young people.”

She added that the media has promoted accountability to end violence against women and children.

“Let me state that without the work of the media in our society, most challenges of women and children will not have been brought to the lamplight let alone receiving positive attention” she said
