Ebonyi judiciary rakes in over N35m in one year, 1, 295 cases pending

The Ebonyi state judiciary, Friday, said it generated over N35 million in the 2022/2023 legal year.

Chief Judge of the state, Justice Elvis Ngene, disclosed this during the special court session marking the opening of the 2023/2024 legal year in the premises of the state high court, Abakaliki.

Justice Ngene noted that the court within 2022/2023 made an income of over N35 million through several items of revenue accrued to the state government.

He said, “During the past 2022/2023 legal year, the following items of revenue accrued to the state government from court fees and fines, probate and marriage fees. Fees and fines from the High Court amounted to N5, 157,380.00 in revenue generation. Fines and fees generated at the Magistrates’ Courts are N4, 278,970.00.

“Fines and fees from the Customary Court of Appeal amounted to N382, 150.00. Fines and fees at the Customary Courts came up to N825, 390.00. The fees generated by the Probate Registry is N17,857,270.55 2.03. The fees generated at the Marriage Registry within the period is N7,285,000.00 Total amount generated by the Judiciary within the period under review is N35,786,160.55”

Ngene further reviewed the number of cases treated and pending cases within the year.

“In the year under review, the number of cases pending in the High Court before the period is 15,990. A total of 9218 cases were filed. The number of cases disposed of is 11,289 and the number of cases now pending is 13,918.

“At the Magistrate Court, 3,961 cases were pending at the beginning of the last legal; a total of 4,072 cases were filed while 3,820 cases were disposed of during the period and 4,213 cases were pending at the end of the said period.

“Records at the Customary Court of Appeal disclose that a total of 843 cases were pending at the beginning of the last legal year; 148 cases were filed within the period. A total of 98 cases were disposed of and 893 cases were pending at the end of the period.

“From the Customary Courts across the State, we have 183 cases filed while 1,335 cases were pending at the beginning of the period. 218 cases were disposed of. The total number of cases pending at the end of the period is 1,295.

“We do have other special courts like the Family Courts, (for High Court and Magistrate Court): the Revenue Court, and the Sanitation and Health Courts.”
