Cholera kills 7 in Jigawa

No fewer than seven people were said to have been killed by the recent outbreak of the suspected cholera in Hadejia town, the headquarters of Hadejia local government area of Jigawa state.
A source in Hadejia town that the outbreak started two days ago believed to have resulted from the dirty water consumed by the affected residents from broken pipes.
Checks by our correspondent revealed that the affected people, numbering 300, were being brought from various areas within and outside the town to hospitals and clinics in Hadejia.
However, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tafida Abubakar, confirmed the outbreak to some media, saying that it was caused by lack of clean drinking water experienced in some towns as a result of power outages by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
The commissioner explained that it was not real a confirmed case of cholera, but gastro-enteritis which caused the victims to vomiting and purging for a long time.
It could be recalled that similar endemic disease once rear its head two years ago in Birnin Kudu local government area of the state forcing the authorities concerned to take necessary action to stop the outbreak.
Meanwhile, Governor Sule Lamido yesterday visited Hadejia to ascertain the magnitude of the outbreak for himself.
