Benue govt warns politicians against use of thugs

Benue State Security Council Tuesday cautioned politicians against the use of thugs to harass political opponents.

The security council also charged leaders at all levels to intensify synergy in combating criminality in the state.

A communique issued at the end of the Benue state security council/stakeholders meeting on the security challenges in Benue, advised stakeholders in the state to sustain support to the government of Benue state and the security agencies.

The meeting urged traditional rulers and other stakeholders to ensure that the remaining weapon taken from the murdered soldiers were returned.

According to the communique, members of communities in Benue state were told not to harbour criminals in their communities and should report suspicious persons in their midst to security agencies.

The communique which was signed by Governor Samuel Ortom and Secretary to the State Government Tony Ijohor SAN, said the meeting recommended increased surveillance in Benue communities.

It urged traditional rulers and other stakeholders to support security agencies through intelligence gathering.

“The meeting also commended the governor and stakeholders for ensuring the recovery of 11 out of the 12 weapons that were taken away from the murdered soldiers.

“The meeting mandated the governor to lead a delegation of Benue state to visit the President and Commander in Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces to condole him for what has happened and thank him for his patience and understanding.

“The meeting recommends that security support be provided to Traditional Rulers to enable them discharge their duties effectively at the grassroots level,”

“The meeting recommended that all illegal revenue check points should be dismantled with immediate effect.

“The meeting supported the call for restructuring and devolution of powers, as well as a review of the revenue sharing formula,” the communique reads in part.
