Bayelsa poll: NAWOJ commends INEC on engagements, enlightenment

The chairperson Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Bayelsa state, has commended INEC for its massive engagement with stakeholders in the state and state-wide mass enlightenment campaign against electoral violence and voter education that commenced in state in the last one month.

Speaking to journalists at the weekend, the NAWOJ chairperson, Maria Osomo  said “INEC has  reached out to  almost all the sectors in the state in the areas of sensitisation and enlightenment  and protective measures against violence.

“If we really mean well for the state we should think about a violent-free Bayelsa election, it is the ingredient for development and not fighting.”

She also called on  journalists covering the election in  the state to as much as possible detach themselves from politicians and focus more on their duties as required.

“I want to appeal to journalists to as much as possible detach themselves from politicians. In as much as we want to get the news, we should also think of our safety.

“A lot of times the supporters of the political gladiators do not differentiate who is on a national assignment and journalists are on national assignment. They should read between the lines as well as get objective reportage,” she said.
