AFCON qualifier: Hostile Sierra Leone force Super Eagles to conduct fresh Covid-19 tests

Wounded and embattled the Super Eagles have arrived Freetown to hostile reception at the International Airports ahead of Tuesday’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone

On arrival, the entire Nigerian delegation was subjected to another COVID-19 test at the airport despite plea by the Nigerian delegation led by Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau that the team just did a test before leaving Nigeria.

The plea fell on deaf ears as the hostility and tension grew between the immigration officials and the Nigerian delegation. The chartered flight landed at 12:15pm and the players were unable to leave the Airport until almost four hours later.

The Super Eagles was later in the day allowed to train and have a feel of the Siaka Stevens Stadium at 5:00pm Nigerian time.

Gernot Rohr’s men will face the Leone Stars in a matchday four encounter with a good numbers of players in excellent condition for the encounter, except for Victor Oshimen who had returned to Italy the Eagles look good on paper.

A win for the Rohr’s men will secure a place in next year AFCON finals slated for Cameroon.

Rohr is expected to re-jig the starting line up and give shirts to players who are ready to deliver. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is likely to give way to Daniel Akpeyi who plies his trade in South Africa

The three-time African champions were held to a 4-4 draw by the Leone Stars last Friday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
