Adamawa varsity embarks on indefi nite strike

Non-academic staff of the Adamawa State University, Mubi, have commenced indefi nite strike to protest poor funding and other problems aff ecting staff welfare in the institution. Addressing a joint press conference in Yola, the non academic staff comprising Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institution (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologist (NAAT), said the state government had failed to comply with the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the unions. Spokesman of the unions, who is also the chairman of SSANU, Comrade James Fwa, said that the unions had written a reminder to government but in vain. “Th e union has written a reminder to the authorities concern on the above matter but to no avail. Th erefore the resumption of this strike action is necessitated by the desire to save the university from imminent collapse. “We call on all stakeholders to understand and support the unions in the resumed strike,” Fwa said. It will be recalled that Adamawa state government had two weeks ago announced the immediate sack of the vicechancellor of the university and the dissolution of the governing council of the institution. Th e state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, was appointed as acting vice-hancellor to restore stability in the university
